it's not a flaw, i just bought the dvd set of the trilogy that came out not too long ago and on the special features it's explained, these are the exact words from the dvd: the sudden rotation of the Delorean from the lightening hit, accelerates it to 88 MPH when it spins

What you have to do is notice detail. Remember back in part 1 when the original DeLorean was zapped by lightning so that Marty could go back to 1985? Well, in the beginning of part 2, while Marty, Doc, and the girl were going to 2015, the machine was reading, JAN. 1 1885. And Doc, slapped the machine and proclaimed,"I gotta fix this machine." Well, later when Marty got the Sports Almanac back from teen Biff, the machine was reading yet again, JAN 1 1885. So, simply the machine was still lightning sensitive, and so when the DeLorean got struck... BZZZZ ... Doc was transferred back to 1885, and the DeLorean was rendered useless.

Dude, it's a *movie*...
:)
I think the idea was that the lightning strike overloaded the time circuits and caused them to activate without getting up to 88. But hey, make up your own explanation...it's a *movie.* As in NOT REAL.

Because when you overload 10.21 jigaWatts (from the lightning) into the flux capacitor, you don't need to go 88 mph. Mr. Fusion was fully operational, but got overloaded.

Because he did somthing with the car in the future and becasue lightinig is powerful he wouldn't need to go 88 miles per hour.

Thanks! You just ruined the whole series for me!!!
To try and salvage it, I would guess that the DeLorean only needs to go 88mph to generate enough electricity (with it's generator) to get the plutonium to activate. Since it was struck by lightning, it had the electricity it needed.
(I'll have to believe this one so that I can keep watching the series)
BTW - I went on my very first date to see BTTFP2 in the theater...
P.S. - to the first poster, here in California, you don't go back in time for going 88mph, but you can DO time for going 88mph...

I have a better question: how do you go back in time by going 88 miles an hour?

Hi. The voltage from the lightning overloaded the flux capacitor.
