The current phase of the Mayan calander ends on Dec. 21, 2012. But their calender does not just stop. A new phase starts the next day, just like our calender did on Dec. 31, 1999. The Mayans did not predict that this would be the end of the world. They had a long term claender that lasted about 5200 years. When that cycle was over, the Mayans would have just continued with the first day of the first year of a new cycle.
It is amazing how people misinterpret ordinary mundane things and twist them to try to predict the end of the world. Please don't believe their misrepresentations. Investigate for yourself!!

The Mayan calendar stops in May of 2012. Maybe they didn't think we as a species would ever live that long. Or perhaps they just didn't care enough to continue the beyond 2012 because... let's face it, the poor souls working on that thing would never ever stop. It's not like the calendar system we use today where "If it's this year use calendar 1, if not use 2 or 3...."
The End-of-the-World conspiracy with the Mayan calendar is the same as the one with that comet where a bunch of people off-ed themselves to catch mothership 1. There's nothing to see... move along.....

I don't exactly know why it stops there, but it has something to do with how they were counting. If they were still existing and using the calendar, they would simply start at 0 again.
PS: Somewhen around 2035 there will be a point when the conventional time counter (milliseconds from 1/1 1970 to now) will flow over in normal C programs. Does anyone think of that? ;-)

Hi. On December 21, 2012 the plane of the ecliptic will coincide with the plane of the galaxy. The Mayans knew this by observing the precession of the equinox. I think I may still buy my wife some Festivus presents, though.

I just looked on my web server, and its definition file for time zones ends in 2038 - that's when the world will end.
Cirric's answer is the best I've heard so far. That's probably the reason it cycles at that point. I wonder if it'll be cheap to book a hotel for that new year's eve party in 2012..... Well, if the world ends, then at least I won't have to pay the tab. :)

Our calendar comes to stop on December 31st every year. What do we do? We start a new calendar. That's what the Mayan calendar does...it starts over.
So we can all look forward to the kooks getting all freaked out in another 5000 years.

It is not a theory it stops then. That IS actually a fact.
As to the theory it predicts the end of the world, that is not a theory, but a lunatic fringe fantasy.

It's the Mayan calendar, and it doesn't stop, that's a misconception - it just starts over. It's cyclical.
