Sick of standard? Me too. I'm still working at a bootscreen running on my pc, but it won't do anything. Nevertheless you can create your own bootscreen. You just need a resource editor (I recommend ResourceHacker, google for it). Then you have to replace some bitmaps in teh ntoskrnl.exe, but don't ask me for teh exact way, I really don't know by heart.
Log on background: I think you're talking about this blue screen with the pictures of the users. There's a system prog you can edit the same way like the bootscreen, but with another file. I don't use the welcome screen so I don't know the file name. But I'm sure tomorrow (here it's 10 o clock in teh evening) I'll find something.
EDIT: Yes, StyleXP's good. But you have to be quick because it's just free for 30 days. And, for heavens sake, forget themeXP. Okay, some bootscreens are good, but I've already got a piece of adware from that site and I heard they'd got much more.
