It's extremely sad. I'm helping a friend to put together a CD to be played at her daughter's funeral. I'm finding it hard to find suitable suggestions. She doesn't want a hymn or something religious (though reference to heaven or angels is OK). Any suggestions welcome....

Thanks

Thanks for everyone's suggestions and good wishes. I listened to as many as I could find. In the end these are the songs that I'm putting on disc for her to choose from:

Sarah Mclachlan: Angel and Wild Horses (the Rolling Stones cover)

Eric Clapton: Tears in heaven

Nat King Cole: unforgettable

Eva Cassidy: Somewhere over the rainbow & I know you by heart

Kenny Chesney - Who you'd be today

Katie Melua - I cried for you

Dixie Chicks - Without you

Nina Simone - Here comes the sun, little darlin

Norah Jones - Thinking about you

Train - When I look to the sky

Def Leppard - Miss you in a heartbeat

Enya - May it be

Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge over troubled water

I am so sorry for your friend's loss and the pain you both must feel.

I heard this CD played at the funeral of a child and it brought me to tears...its a soft kind of country song

Calling All Angels by Jane Siberry

Santa Maria, Santa Teresa, Santa Anna, Santa Susannah
Santa Cecilia, Santa Copelia, Santa Dominica, Mary Angelica, Frater Achad, Frater Pietro, Julianus, Petronella
Santa, Santos, Miroslaw, Vladimir and all the rest

a man is placed upon the steps, a baby cries
and high above the church bells start to ring
and as the heaviness the body
oh the heaviness settles in
somewhere you can hear a mother sing

then it's one foot then the other
as you step out onto the road

how much weight? how much weight?
then it's how long? and how far?
and how many times before it's too late?

calling all angels
calling all angels
walk me through this one
don't leave me alone
calling all angels
calling all angels
we're cryin' and we're hurtin'
and we're not sure why...

and every day you gaze upon the sunset
with such love and intensity
why it's...it's almost as if
if you could only crack the code
then you'd finally understand what this all means

but if you could...do you think you would
trade it in all the pain and suffering?
ah, but then you'd miss
the beauty of the light upon this earth
and the sweetness of the leaving

calling all angels
calling all angels
walk me through this one
don't leave me alone
callin' all angels
callin' all angels
we're tryin'
we're hopin'
we're hurtin'
we're lovin'
we're cryin'
we're callin'
'cause we're not sure how this goes

For a baby girl I like Someday by Kenny Chesney. Look up the lyrics, I think its appropriate. Very sorry for her loss, it's not easy to lose a child. I also like Somewhere over the rainbow. Best wishes
Artist: Kenny chesney
Song: Who You'd Be Today
Album:

sunny days seem to hurt the most.
i wear the pain like a heavy coat.
i feel you everywhere i go.
i see your smile, i see your face,
i hear you laughin' in the rain.
i still can't believe you're gone.

it ain't fair: you died too young,
like the story that had just begun,
but death tore the pages all away.
god knows how i miss you,
all the hell i've been through,
just knowin' no-one could take your place.
an' sometimes i wonder,
who'd you be today?

would you see the world? would you chase your dreams?
settle down with a family,
i wonder what would you name your babies?
some days the sky's so blue,
i feel like i can talk to you,
an' i know it might sound crazy.

it ain't fair: you died too young,
like the story that had just begun,
but death tore the pages all away.
god knows how i miss you,
all the hell i've been through,
just knowin' no-one could take your place.
an' sometimes i wonder,
who you'd be today?

today, today, today.
today, today, today.

(instrumental break)

sunny days seem to hurt the most.
i wear the pain like a heavy coat.
the only thing that gives me hope,
is i know i'll see you again some day.

some day, some day, some day.

OH my God, you just broke my heart!!! Personally I love that song "What a Wonderful World". I have told my husband and kids that I want that played at my funeral. It was originally sung by Louis Armstrong I think. It was an older black man. If you look it up on the internet Im sure you can find it. Another good one would by "Wind beneath my Wings" by Better Midler. Or Tears In Heaven by Eric Clapton. He wrote that for his son who died.

Here is a song called "I Cried for You" by Katie Melua off of her Piece by Piece album.

You're beautiful so silently
It lies beneath a shade of blue
It struck me so violently
When I looked at you

But others pass, they never pause,
To feel that magic in your hand
To me you're like a wild rose
They never understand why

I cried for you
When the sky cried for you
And when you went
I became a hopeless drifter
But this life was not for you
Though I learned from you,
That beauty need only be a whisper

I'll cross the sea for a different world,
With your treasure, a secret for me to hold

In many years they may forget
This love of ours or that we met,
They may not know
how much you meant to me.

I cried for you
And the sky cried for you,
And when you went
I became a hopeless drifter.
But this life was not for you,
Though I learned from you,
That beauty need only be a whisper

Without you now I see,
How fragile the world can be
And I know you've gone away
But in my heart you'll always stay.

I cried for you
And the sky cried for you,
And when you went
I became a hopeless drifter.
But this life was not for you,
Though I learned from you,
That beauty need only be a whisper
That beauty need only be a whisper

I'm sorry for your friend's loss. The only one I can think of right off is "In the arms of an Angel" by Sarah Mclachian. All the words don't fit but The song is so soft and beautiful that you tend to ignore the words themselves. May God give your friend, and you, peace.

When my sister died, (she was 22.) I selected "Tears In Heaven" by Eric Clapton.

Some Lyrics:
Would you know my name,
if I saw you in Heaven.
Would you be the same,
if I saw you in Heaven.

Very sorry for your freind's loss. My prayers for the family.
