I think not. Obviously Anorexia is a mental illness, and it's intent is not to end the life of the individual as suicide is. Because of the illness, the death was due to the individual's actions, but it was not a deliberate attempt to end life.

I don't think so. I think suicide means that you had an intent to kill yourself.

If someone died as a result of anorexia, I wouldn't consider it suicide anymore than someone who died of lung cancer after a lifetime of smoking, or a person who died in a car crash because they were trying to multitask or weren't driving carefully.

It's tragic, and yes, the final result came about because of the actions of the person, but since they weren't intending to die, I don't think it could be considered suicide.

To the person who said you have control over suicide: what about depression? Depression is an illness, but when you're in the clutches of depression, you can kill yourself, something you would not have done if you hadn't had depression. Suicide then?

No, on the autopsy it would not be written down as suicide. The person bascially did it to themselves, but a drug addict that does from overdose is not normally written down as suicide. The person with anorexia doesn't necessarily want to kill themselves.

Anorexics are NOT consciously CHOOSING to commit suicide. They suffer from a serious brain disorder that distorts their perceptions of 'self', which in turn, leads to eating behaviors that can be eventually lethal to them.

Are alcoholics committing suicide? Are cigarette smokers committing suicide? Are people who don't eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables committing suicide? Are people who live on fast foods and junk foods committing suicide? Is a person who does not wear a seat-belt attempting to commit suicide? Or... are these examples of behaviors that increase the risk of death, but are not actually partaken in to specifically achieve death (i.e. to commit suicide)?

Best wishes, and thanks for an interesting question!

No, they died of an untreated medical/mental disorder. That is not suicide. If anything, look at how they were raised... maybe you could consider it murder? There's a thought question.

Figuring that anorexia is a disease, an eating disorder, then dying of it would be the end result of disease, i.e. not self-inflicted. This would be about the same category of those who die from drug overdose or alcoholism.

No I dont think so...Because its an addiction to the person once they keep starving themselves its like they have control over it cause they cant control anything else in their life. But the person's goal is usually to lose weight/get attention not to die so I don't think its suicide.

suicide is a concious descision and effort to kill one's self. anorexia is a disease. thats like saying a drug addict who overdoses commited suicide. thats not true. the ultimate goal with any addiction is not to die, it is to feed the addiction. even if the actions taken could warrant a death.

No, suicide is when you literally kill yourself.

That person didn't stab/shoot/drown themselves or jumped off a building/banged their head on the wall/left their car running with the garage door closed/hung themselves.

It happened slowly, not instantly, and in most cases, they didn't MEAN to kill themselves. They're only tired of looking ugly.

Now, PISS OFF!

No.... Ignorance. Maybe even stupidity.

But if it should be considered suicide, shouldn't the world of fashion and celebrity giving us unrealistic ideas about what is beautiful and attractive be guilty of homicide?
