I have been in the search for employment for the last few months and I recive more rejections from propective employers because of a bad credit history. In a perfect world I'd have a great paying job and not be behind in my credit but sadly no one goes hiring you when your credits bad. WHy is that? It seems like a strong case of discrimination to not hire someone simply because their credit isnt satisfactory, regardless of whether or not they are qualified for the position. Love to hear everyones views on this sad job state of this country.

This is a GREAT question. I've asked and was told that if someone has really bad credit or tons of debt, it shows that there may be the potential for theft. But that's what a criminal check is for. Someone else mentioned that it measures your trustworthiness - which makes a little more sense.

I think it's crap, because after my divorce, my credit score dropped to 550. It's back up now and I even have a mortgage, but it's creepy that I could have lost out on opportunities based that score.

I shouldn't have to explain my personal life to a stranger; justify a number that's really none of their business.

I feel your pain. I have had two offers with start dates and everything. In honesty, I told the last place that I had bad credit and if it was going to be a problem then let me know so I could remove myself with dignity. I was told no, but they would call me back......Yeah right!!!! There have been studies showing that employee with negative credit in their backgrounds are LESS I repeat LESS likely to steal and become problem employees.

I had one employer list this as the only reason in a letter as to why they didn't hire me. I worked as a temp for them for over 6 months. You can't tell me that they could not have been a judge of my character in that time frame. Otherwise, why would they have tried to hire me!!!! I did question them on this, and then the story was changed to they couldn't verify my references......My references were never called- I checked.

Perhaps instead of passing a judgment on someone in complete ignorance, they should ask the potential employee; there might be a legitimate reason.

In my case I had a very premature set of twins with a lot of medical bills and a boyfriend who decided that it was a bit much for him to help. I was by no means an irresponsible person who was a spend thrift.

I know that in California it is illegal to check credit history for employment purposes. I'm guessing you're not in California!

More and more, credit history is becoming the standard by which people are measured. It's not really fair, nor is it entirely accurate. People have bad breaks, but it doesn't mean they aren't trustworthy, and it doesn't mean they can't build themselves up again. It's not fair because, if your credit prevents you from getting a good job, it's difficult to build up again. It's sort of a catch 22!

it is mainly true if you are going for a law enforcement job. The rason is because they want to see how reliable and consistent you are when it comes to paying bills and debts, if you are always late on your bills and payments they see you as not responsible thgus not giving you the chance to prove them different. It sucks but thats the way it is in this world now the best thing you could do is get a free credit report and fix all those problems! Good luck

I would think that a better judge of character is a person's criminal record. That would list if the person has been charges with theft and been caught doing it.

Besides, they just reported that people w/ bad credit are more likely to be good employees.

Things happen.

Think about what your asking. Your credit is bad. Your credibility is bad. You bit off more than you can chew. Depending on the type of job, I wouldn't hire an accountant with bad credit to manage money. There are many reasons why businesses would use credit history to indicate the character of the applicant. If you don't pay your bills on time you probably won't come to work on time. Just my 2 cents. I have four people that work for me.

I find it hard to believe they check you credit history. It's none of their business and I would ask them to explain their reasoning's and if I didn't like the answer I would withdraw my application

If you are in need of money due to bad credit you might steal from them - at least that's what they think.
