I am job hunting. And after a period of weeks of hearing nothing, I finally got offered a position. It's a temporary position, but the skill I gain from it will put me in a much stronger place in my career.

Since being offered the position, I've had several calls from other companies offering interviews. One company is one that I'd really like to work for. Do I interview, ask them to hold till the temporary appointment is over? Is it OK to turn down a position I've already accepted (they had a hard time filling as few are qualified)?

Right now I have a solid offer, and the others are just interviews. What is the etiquette in job seeking?

As a temp, you can continue searching for direct employment without violating Job Hunter Etiquette. In your shoes, I'd accept the temp job and continue interviewing for the position with your dream company.

The company that has the temp assignment may decide to offer you a direct position to reduce the risk that you'll leave, in which case you'll be in the enviable position of having multiple direct opportunities from which to choose.

Good luck!

Interview for the company first, and decide if it's a position that you would like. If they offer you the position, explain your situation. Tell them you would like to accept (if you do), but that you must be professional and give at least two weeks notice at your current position. They should be willing to wait the two weeks, and might wait for the entire term of your appointment. I would say all that you would be required to give would be your 2 week notice. Also, if your current temporary position will ultimately help you more than this new job you're offered, take that into consideration. Good Luck!

Well, don't reject a solid offer for posibilities, that's for sure. If you really want to pursue the other positions, do so alongside taking the offer, and make your decision when you have two offers in-hand.

The best option would be the one you bring up yourself, telling the interviewers about the temp position and letting them know when it ends and you'll be available. However, depending on the length of the temp postion and the needs of the interviewer, that might not be the most practical option, in that it might put you out of the running forthe other positions.

That's when things get sticky. Certainly, Company A can't force you to work at the position you've accepted - if you opt out (or quit), that's it. But I wouldn't expect to get a reference out of it, that's for sure.

Why don't you do the termporary job until a permanent one is offered. Most temp employers are aware that you would want a perm job, so would be ok with you leaving a little early or coming in a little late so you could attend early/late interviews if you are honest as to why. It may even push theminto offering you a perm position if they like you!
Good luck

Treat them as they would treat you. They don't give a flying sh*t about you. Take the temp job for now and tell them you are interviewing and may need to leave for them. Just be poilite and honest. A temp job will surely understand if you are attempting to gain a permanent position (hell they may end up offering you a permanent role if they realize they may lose you). Work and earn money while you can and interview on the side. The only way to come up quick is to keep on moving. Good luck

Work the temporary position, but it's okay to interview during that time, just try to make the interviews after business hours.

I recently hired a guy that was in a temporary position. He ended his assignment to come on board with us, and starts Tuesday.
