Many things should have been avoided.
First, hiring Vince Russo, whose ideas of shock factor creates cash are ridiculous. He has absolutely no concept of how to adequately suspend a person's disbelief. For example, Oklahoma becoming women's champ or David Arquette being world champ.
Allowing wrestlers like Kevin Nash run the booking and storylines. Didn't work when Kevin Sullivan and Dusty Rhodes did it back in the ol' NWA then why would it then in WCW.
Not pushing younger talent. The AWA made it a bad habit not giving younger talent the time in the spotlight that they deserved. Instead the AWA let the old farts like Verne Gange and Nick Bockwinkel(great in his prime) rule the card past their prime. The AWA no longer exists mind you. The younger stars will leave b/c of this.
WCW+AWA parallel-young superstars=premature death
Having a 3 hour show(Nitro) or a 2 hr. show(Thunder) that would waste the first hour doing nothing but skits or talking. People pay for wrestling and seeing 2 men/women tell a story inside the ring. They don't pay for long drawn out promos, skits, etc.
Holding talented wrestlers like Bret Hart, Chris Jericho, and Chris Benoit back.
All of these and more helped WCW die.

I really thought they misused Bret Hart. He should have been a main eventer right when he got there while he was still hot off of the Montreal incident. They should have also waited a little longer before Goldberg got his big push towards the WCW championship in a big pay per view such as Starrcade.
WCW really had the wrestling industry in the palm of their hand and totally blew it. It is just a shame that they did not know how to utilize the great roster of talent that they had at the time.

I don't think there was anything they could have done to stop it from closing down. AOL Time Warner didn't want wrestling on their television stations (TNT, TBS) and they were determined to get rid of it. Without a national tv deal, WCW wasn't really worth a lot.
