I write in Word. Word comes with its own thesaurus, but I dont like it. I keep thesaurus.com open as a window on my computer while I write so I can refer to it anytime I need a word. It's never closed.

The word you need depends entirely on the emotion you desire. "He walked" doesnt tell you much. But if you say "He put his hands firmly in his pockets and walked towards Mary, with a look of determination on his face" or "He walked aimlessly down the street looking in store windows as he waited for his wife to finish in the shoe store" or "She walked across the office floor and every man in the room looked up from their cubicle for a better view" then we know exactly how he was walking. Walked means something different in each of those sentences. See?

Strolled, ambled, paced, strode all mean walked, but all convey a different emotion.

Often it isnt another word you need, but more adjectives and adverbs and a more complete description of the action. It's how you describe the walk that matters. C.

trod, strolled, paced, wandered, roamed, meandered. Look up in the dictionary the word you want, then look up all the other words and you will see the many different connotations.
