In my 30yrs experience i would say the fastest growing broad leaf tree is the white willow, when cuttings have taken it will grow anything from 1 to 3 or 4 ft in a good growing season, in some cases i have even seen 7ft of new growth. Beautiful trees but very vigorous. Other fast growers are lime, beech sycamore, poplar To mention a few.

The sweetgum or popular is probably the faster growing broad leaf tree. Some have been known to grow over ten feet in a year. Willows are not considered to be broad leaf. Some Maple trees grow fast also. Another fast growing tree is the Royal Empress tree. It can grow up to ten feet and more in one season. It also has beautiful blue bouquets of flowers. The scyamore tree would not compete with the popular and sweetgum is speed of growth, but would ultimately out grow both of them. For the tree with the fastest start I would go with The Royal Empress, and then I would pick the Popular tree and then the sweet gum.
