Pepper can cause irritation to mucus membranes and effect people with sensitive gastrointestinal tracts. It is not radioactive. It may however contain remains of insects. There is a measurement of how many insect parts are allowed in spices and pepper is one where they are found. It is a small percentage, but Under the microscope you can see these. I have never heard that it was good for you. In times of no refrigeration, it was used to cover the taste of spoiling food.

For people with certain conditions, like diverticulitis, black pepper can be poisonous, sort of. It can collect in the little pockets in the intestine. Iceberg lettuce is another thing to beware of, it turns to black sludge in the intestines. This does not apply to everyone, but to people with certain intestinal conditions.
