I've owned several different brands and haven't had a problem except with Dell. I've only bought one Dell so it's hard to say anything about the reliability of the brand.
Toshiba is ranked one very highly for their laptops by Consumer Reports. All they do is notebooks and they don't make desktops. I currently own a Toshiba. I did have to return it after the first week because the touchpad got stuck but it was replaced and haven't had a problem yet (just 3 weeks).
I've owned Compaq's and HP's for a long time. I gave my first Compaq to my sister 3 years ago and it's still working great. I gave my 2nd HP laptop to another sister 2 years ago and it's working great.
I recently gave my Averatec C3500 to my mom and don't know how that's working. I didn't really like it. It was a Tablet but it didn't work very well as one. It works fine as an ultraportable laptop though.
Sony is known more for style and is a little more expensive.
I would just pick any computer that fits your specifications and price range. The price is comparable between all of them and if you're really worried about things going wrong you can buy an extended warranty.
However, Toshiba, HP, and Sony probably have the best reliability ratings in the market.

those are all laptop makers. They make the actual hardware. A PC is any of those makes as the Windows software, the operating system goes on all of them. The other big operating system Mac OS X only runs on Mac computers. Choose the operating system you want and go from there. I have a Toshiba and a Macbook pro. If you want the mac operating system get a mac. If you want the PC operating system get one of the computers you listed above. It all depends on what kind of drives you want (DVD burning capability CD burning) Also if you like the design of the computer. Don't get an ugly computer. Get a model that suits your needs. If you want the little knob thing in between the keys that controls the cursor get a model with that function.
