when I lived in Tampa we use to have these huge spiders that were hairy, dark brown or black in color and they would jump from high up on the door frame to the ground and crawl really fast on the ground. Soemone said they were wolf spiders but I'm not sure. Does anyone know what kind of spiders these are? Does it sound familiar? I'm just curious.

yes, they were scary!! I forgot to say that sometimes they would try to hide on top of a door or window frame and they would stretch their legs out on either side. Like 4 on one side and 4 on the other, all straight and flat together. Kind of hard to explain.

Wolf spiders range from about 1/2 inch to 2 inches in length, hairy, and are typically brown to gray in color with various markings or lines. Wolf spider mothers carry their large egg sacs around with them. When the young spiderlings hatch they climb onto their mother's back and ride around until partially grown. Wolf spiders are not poisonous, though as with all spiders, bites may cause reactions in certain individuals.

It could have been wolf spiders because those things are big (EWWWWW).
But they usually hide in the dark corners somewhere in the house. An exterminator (came out for mice) told us they were good to have because they eat the other bugs you don't want in your house.
He said they were harmless - yeah, unless you're like me and it gives you a fricken heart attack!
