I also have a Corolla ('96) with 285,000 miles on it. I'm afraid we've both reached the Retail Value of "Will Haul Off For Free". At this point, "run it 'til it won't run no mo'!"
However, in all that time, it's failed to crank only 4 times (twice because I left the lights on!) It runs great, it's paid for, and still gets well over 30 mpg. I ain't about to get rid of it until I have to.
Whenever the transmission, engine, or something else major goes out, trash the car.

Well based on mechanical upkeep costs, major breakdowns such as motor or the body separates from the frame :) you can probably keep it for as long as you are able/willing to drive it.
One of our cars is 21 years old...we have it as a show car but it does see the road in the summer (86 Riviera in beautiful shape) we're told it was a Prototype and only 25 of this particular car was ever produced, it has features on it that cars today still don't have, so if you can keep it in excellent shape body wise and it's a car you think you'd like to dress up at any point, go for it. Eventually, they can be worth money. Mine was appraised in 2004 at $10,000 yet our 89 Bonneville died 2 years ago. So all depends.

My car is 15 years old and still is running fine and I will keep it until the cost of repairing it will cost me more than $1 000.00 a year, because a low cost new car will cost around $4 800.00 a year with a good down payment. But if you have the money trade it in and ride a new car.

Its a tough question because a car to many people is more than just transportation.
I kind of like nice cars, luxury or high end sports cars. So i tend to change cars often, but its more a fashion statement than practical.

Keep it until you don't want it anymore. Heck, my car is older than I am. (It rolled off the assembly line in September of 1966... 3 months before I was born.)

you could expect to see 350k on the odo. Toyota's last a lifetime so as long as you keep that oil changed.

Had my Totota Tercel for 23 years. Maintain it well and it will keep going and going and going, just like the Duracell Bunny!
