Sometimes my wife will tell me to wake up because I am snoring. This is very odd to me because I do not hear myself snore. Even when I am in the half awake/half asleep stage when I am semi-concous of my surroundings she tells me that, not only am I snoring, but snoring *loudly*. Yet, even in this partially consious state I do not hear myself snore. Why is that?

semi-conscious or unconscious, your mind is shutting down, and tuning out sounds is one of the first things it does prior to deep sleep. Sounds that our minds recognize as normal to us, are filtered out and ignored. But if you are snoring enough to disturb your spouse, you should consider asking for a sleep study from your doctor. You could have obstructive sleep apnea, and that has been linked to heart disease, liver failure, kidney disease and a host of mental a neurological disorders.

Try recording yourself and you'll find out you do snore. You never hear yourself snore because you're asleep. As soon as you get to even a half conscious state you wake up.

My husband has the same thing. I suspect its because you (and he) are actually more asleep than you think you are.

If the snoring is recent, or has become progressive worse, you may want to make an appointment with your doctor. There are a lot of new treatments for snoring that will help you and your wife sleep better.

The__Only's has the correct answer. Make an appointment to see a pulmonary Dr. He'll set you up for a sleep study in a hospital overnight. Your problem will be solved.

Give your poor wife a break. You owe it to her and your self.

Because you're in deep sleep and it's not an external noise.
