I have found that a lot of people have the ONLY answer when it comes to a lot of things, breastfeeding, abortion, ect. A lot of people, women especially have very closed minds, they never stop to listen and really soak up what someone else is saying. Even if that person is wrong, it doesn't hurt to hear the view. It can only lead to thinking and possibly coming up with another alternate view.

Probably because everyone wants to be the expert. It has been 17+ years since I have had my children and so much has changed. There was an e mail not too long ago that circulated around called TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE 30's through the 70's. It was the best thing I have read in a long time and I think all the "new" parents who panic about every little thing should read it. I am not making light of SIDS, it is a very serious, terrible thing, but, I believe it is like Cancer....no one knows for sure what causes it and they don't know how to cure it. In a few years all the "statistics" will be debunked and replaced with "new statistics" that are opposite.

It's one of those subjects where there's alot of answers and alot of suspicions but the problem is that there is just not enough certainty that any one thing causes sids. There's been studies that say it's a protien problem, there's been studies that say it's immature immune systems, there's studies claiming that it's from bacteria in mattresses, there's studies that claim there is no such thing and it's the parents murdering their babies(which is horribly wrong), there's studies that claim it's caused by the temperature in the room being too warm while another says too cold. The fact is, there's just not enough facts to say "this one thing causes sids and this one test or doing this one thing can save ALL the victims of sids" There actually may be different subsets of sids even. We just don't know enough about it.

I think the reason is because so many things cause it or don't cause it, like pacifiers- one group says the use of them increases the riski and another group says it decreases the risk. I think the bottom line here is that it does just happen because no one can give parents who have suffered a SIDS loss an answer as to what exactly happened.

Not a lot is known about SIDS. We can only go on what doctors tell us - which isn't very much. However, they have found that SIDS is lower overseas and believe that having the child bundled on their backs right after birth greatly reduces this. I'm not saying this is it b/c my little one refused to sleep on his back. No one knows for sure, they just nkow that "it happens." Research is still in full swing to try to find out how it is triggered and how it can be prevented.

Actually, new medical evidence shows that about 60% or more of SID's causes are caused by an underdeveloped brain stem in newborns. Its that area that causes the subconscious to reconize a lack of oxygen and to reposition the head to better take in air. When its under developed the brain simply starves of oxygen and the breathing function stops because the child didnt turns its head over, or move it to find air.

You are right it is a very terrifying topic. And what makes it even more scary is that no one (not even scientists) have discovered what causes it. But it has been happening for so long without the technology to study it that some people just assume that it happens sometimes. There are so many possibilities.

You cannot live in fear. All you can do is follow the few recommendations they have that have been shown to be associated with lower rates of SIDS, and then get a good nights sleep.

I was frustrated with the lame explanations too, and then I found this: http://thecauseofsids.org/. My husband and I ordered the mattress wraps for our crib and cradle so they'll be ready when our daughter is born this May. The research is so convincing for this and the solution makes me feel good. It's been much more effective than the "Back to Sleep" campaign, which is all our doctors and researchers here in the US will give us. It just wasn't good enough for me!

I'm not sure. I know a couple problems I have with SIDS is one its scary and two... its always changing, put the baby on his back, no put the baby on his belly.. I am open to listen to absolutely anything that could prevent it... its just changing so often. When I was a baby it was all about being on your back, now its belly and it switches all the time and depending on who you ask.. I do think there should be more research of it.
