Standard steering has been around a lot longer than power steering. You can still drive it, the front end isnt going to fall off in the middle of a corner, but like one answer said you'll be built by the end of the year trying to wrench the steering wheel around at low speeds.

Steering fluid isn't cheap and you are polluting the environment letting it leak . So I recommend either get it fixed, or let the fluid run out and drive with standard steering until you have the money to get it fixed (save up the money you'd spend on power steering fluid).

That's why they're called catastrophic failures: because you don't know when they're going to happen, but when they do it's usually at the worst possible time, and are pretty serious. Get it fixed ASAP. I might fail when you are doing a hard turn at a busy intersection, when you are taking a curved freeway exit at 75, any of those times. The results will not be good. Life-changing, I'm sure.
