My local station just eliminated all the music and replaced it with news and "other" programs. I feel like a dear friend has died. Why are people so ignorant and so willing to disregard the greatest music ever in human history? I feel that the younger generation is just uneducated. What can be done?

It's sad - I only listen to classical on the radio (when I'm in control of it)...There's two stations that I get clearly so I'm a happy camper :) most people think it's weird since I'm 17 and listen to 3/4 classical...but I am a musician ;)

I listen to listener suported radio and although I may disagree with you about what is the greatest music I to have noticed a trend in eliminating music for news/talk.
I know there is this conglomerate called 'clearchannel'that is gobbling up independent stations and turning them into mediocre music company comercials. It's odd,you can always tell a clearchannel station,no matter what type of music they are playing by the station's lack of personallity.
People may not be into classical music but they need to be made aware of the trend.
Have you heard that old story about Nazi Germany?
A guy said"When they took the Jehovah's Witnesses away I thought 'good'and I said nothing..And when they took the gypsies away I said 'good'and I didn't say anything"On and on he went about the people the nazis took away and how he didn't say anything. Then he ends his story by saying"when they came to take me away, there was no one left to say antthing."
They maybe taking away Classical music, now. And then"that disgusting blues music" then boring jazz and on and on until all we hear on the radio is what they want us to hear.
Here's something scary.I was flipping through the channels on my television when I noticed a news story I was interested in on CNN News.
After the story was over the anchor man introduced the comercial break and I will never forget what he said.
He said"We'll be back with all the news you need to know!"
I thought to myself"You just report the news I'll decide what I need to know!"
We are getting to the point were they are telling us what music we need to listen to by virtue of eleminating all the others.
Watch out. Before you know it the only music that will be available is the state approved patriot songs.

The answer is not in wringing your hands and sobbing over the sad state of musical affairs. The best way to spread the joy of great music is to not judge other people's music. Since we are familiar with the great composers, it is up to us to play it for young people who would not hear it otherwise. Take some young people to a performnce.

Our attitude should not be as reformers or as judges, but to offer what we have with a positive and enthusiastic attitude.

The other thing we can do is to familiarize ourselves with young people's music, even if a little. They will be much more open to what we have to say if we are aware of their point of view.

Education, not evangelism is the answer.
