You people who are against the Death Penalty are truly unbelievable!
-Where's the "vengeance" in it?
-Where's the "unfairness" in it? Don't you understand that people like O.J can AFFORD top-of-the-line lawyers just like Magic can afford top health care?
-Why should we give a rat's *** about the criminals family? What about the victim’s family?
-How are criminals and the government on the same level as each other when it comes to "who has the right to kill"? Why shouldn't the government be allowed to kill heinous murders when they are an authority established by God to keep order and administer justice? It's like Jesus said: "Give to Caesars what is Caesars, and give to God what is God's." GOD ALLOWS GOVERNMENT TO KILL! PERIOD!
-Why does it matter if the death penalty is a deterrent or not? THE PUNISHMENT SHOULD FIT THE CRIME!
-And finally, why should we effin care if only 120 people out of the thousands put on death row are innocent? WE'RE HUMANS! WE MAKE MISTAKES! TO BAD!!!

Oh, and I know that you liberals are going to accuse me of being heartless when I say that we shouldn’t care if there’s been 120 innocent people on death row, so here’s my response to that:
Just because there's been 120 people proven innocent doesn't mean that we should abandon all methods of punishment-especially the death penalty! That argument is terrible-you might as well not put people in jail at all, because (sarcasm)"what if they're innocent?"(end sarcasm). THEY WERE CONVICTED DANG IT!!
So, I say again: TO EFFIN BAD!!

You are NOT a true Christian my friend, otherwise you wouldn't be making up lies about Jesus-my personal Lord and Savior!

Information guy: how is the "punishment fitting the crime" VENGANCE if the criminal didn't do anything to ME or YOU?
The only VENGANCE that could come out of the death penalty is if the family of the victim actually KILLED the criminal!
Otherwise, people like me who sentence evil criminals to death are NEUTRAL observers! We have no VENGANCE to take, because the criminal didn't do anything to US!

Here's my point: God didn't say NEVER kill, and neither did Jesus!
When God says don't kill, does he mean NEVER kill or don't kill MOST OF THE TIME? This question is up for interpretation, and I say its the later! ecclesiastes 3:3 proves this: "there is a TIME to kill, and a TIME to heal."
The Bible always balances itself out. And as for Jesus, please take the time to read John 2, Revelation 2 and 19:11-21, Matthwe 23 (especially verse 33), and Matthew 26:53. And how about when he says "give to caesars what is Caesars, and give to Gods what is Gods?"
JESUS WOULD APPROVE OF GOVERNMENT SANCTIONED MURDER!! HE GIVES THE GOVERNMENT SPECIAL PRIVALEGES!!

Oh, and JW, I almost forgot: you are an idiot to call Ecclesiastes a "joke."
Ecclesiastes was written by King Solomon and was inspired by God, and Solomon was arguably the wisest man to ever walk the Earth. You DO know that he wrote Proverbs, write? Are you going to call Proverbs "convoluted" as well?
You are blatantly picking and choosing! What credibility do you have to stand on?
Oh, and you can put this in your pipe and smoke it: 2nd Timothy 2:16.

" I will again refute your claim that Jesus supports murder and/or killing. Why did he not allow the Pharisees (sp?) to stone the woman then in John 8?"
Because the Pharasees were using that prostitute to catch Jesus in a trap! Their goal wasn't to punish her, it was to manipulate her "in order to have a basis for accusing him"-Chapter 8:6. The Pharasees could have cared less about what that prostitute did! jesus knew this, and he decided to let her walk away scott-free!
Just because Jesus allowed for this doesn't mean that government sanctioned murder is wrong! Where did you make that inference?
I don't think well ever agree on whether Jesus allows for government sanctioned murder or not, because guess what-he doesn't say one way or another! You can point out passages of scripture where it would seem like he is AGAINST it, but you can also point out areas where it appears like he DOES approve of it.

Anyway, I have provided my pieces of scripture to back up my beliefs, but so have you. So how about this: our arguments cancel eachother out, and we are left to decide for ourselves whether government sanctioned murder is justified or not.
So, here's my reasoning: WHY DO CHILD MOLESTERS, RASPISTS, AND ALL THOSE OTHER SCUMS DESERVE TO LIVE? WHY? WHY? WHY?

Maybe you didn't get the first time. The god didn't give any government the right to kill people. The bible clearly states that god said vengence is mine (not the governments).
Secondly, there is the cost involved in executing someone, but I imagine you don't pay taxes so you probably don't care.
At the risk of sounding like a dick. I hope someone close to you ends up on death row, maybe that will change your attitude. Spend some time in jail yourself and see how you feel after you get released.
Lastly, keep your legs closed and don't have any kids, there are enough dumb people on the planet already.

As a 30 year veteran of law enforcement I have oft wondered about those opposed. God said in the Bible,"Who so ever shedth Man's blood, By Man shall his blood be Shed". The key word here is "Penalty" It was never meant to be a deterrent. It is a punishment for a crime. We don't care if it deters anyone else from killing. It deters that person from killing again. If it does deter some then that's fine also. For JW. The translation of the Bible says "thou shalt not kill". The original Hebrew says " No Murder"

I agree.
For instance, if a criminal commits a crime heinous enough to warrant a life sentence without a chance for parole - is that not a sentence rendered to the tax payers? The last time I checked, it cost approximately $50,000 a year to incarcerate a criminal. How is that so different than just mercifully ending his meager existence?
And one other thing, there should be no such thing as a repeat offender when it concerns sexual child abuse - it might be argued that the death penalty is not a deterrent for these crimes, but it certainly can't be argued that if the sentence is carried out, the dirt bag won't have a second chance to destroy a child's life.

It is pure vengence. Executing someone does not bring anyone back from the dead.
Unfairness - you point out the most unfair aspect of it to show it is unfair? Yes, OJ can afford the dream team of lawyers to get him off. The vast majority of those on death row had legal aid attorneys appointed by the state.
Governements are not established by god.
Punishment should fit the crime? Oh, so now you are arguing that it IS vengence.
The biggest argument against the death penalty - We are humans, we make mistakes.

Multiple choice question for the poster of this question.
Who is more likely to be confused....
a) GOD
b) the poster of this question
GOD allows governments to kill. You said that.
Thou Shalt not Kill. GOD said that...at least according to my Bible and church.
Would you clarify will GOD says its ok to kill again...I must have slept that day in church.
**Response**
ECCL is the most convoluted book in the Bible. One can prove either side of any position here. You can either accept that or not, you choose. I challenge you to find any commonality between them and they argue both sides of Hebrew law. It is not at like Job in terms of content.
Besides, accoding to your logic, the ten commandments don't now apply. GOS says thou shalt not kill, a later author scribbles down 3:3 and its suddenly ok. Well, Jesus didn't think so either...he proves this in John 8:2-11.
So you can believe its ok, but GOD says it directly and Jesus refused to condemn (to death) the caught in the act adulteress (a violator of the Ten Commandments).
You may email if you think you can provide any more to this, I'd actually love to see you try. Using ECCL to prove anything is a joke, but you may be too young to know or intellectually understand that.
**2nd Reply**
And I can't believe I'm going to bother, but oh well (stupid 4/10 schedule).
1) I never said ECCL was a joke. I said using it as a foundation to argue a scholarly point is a joke, and 99% of Biblical/Religious scholars would agree. ECCL has a bad rep for consistency. Please quote accurately.
2) I will again refute your claim that Jesus supports murder and/or killing. Why did he not allow the Pharisees (sp?) to stone the woman then in John 8. Care to argue the various accounts of Jesus' arrest...Mark, Luke, John and Matthew...and his reponse to violence there (he condemned it)
3) What church do you attend? I have never heard of that in a Church...Jesus supports murder...wow.
Oh well, you are obviously a zealot...and a young one. Perhaps in time some maturity and life experience will give you persepctive.

I totally agree with the death penalty for several reason. #1 jail over crowding. #2 $$$$ it costs $200,000 per yr to house hard core criminals. #3, They don't deserve to walk around free & easy when the victim is "jailed" six feet under.
