Madagascar or Malagasy Republic is NOT part of Africa. It is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Africa, and is the fourth largest island in the world.

The Malagasy Republic was proclaimed on October 14, 1958, as an autonomous state within the French Community. A period of provisional government ended with the adoption of a constitution in 1959 and full independence on June 26, 1960. Its motto is: "Ancestral-land, Liberty, Progress"

Yes, Madagascar is considered as part of Africa although it is separated from the African continent by several hundreds kilometers of ocean. It is located in Indian ocean with Mozambique on its west in the continent.

Fairy did a good job answering this; however, from the perspective of a biologist Madagascar has a flora and fauna which is very distinctive from the African mainland. Many plants and animals are endemic there (meaning found nowhere else). That is usually a good indicator of a place being very distinct.
