Too many! When they were reported missing the insurance
companies had to pay their families. Some were found and ordered to pay back the money plus jail time. Just like some
people claimed to have damages from Hurricane Katrina. Never mind the fact they lived in Montana or elsewhere.

It would be extremely hard to fake your own death in sync with an unexpected tragedy like 9/11. The faking of your death itself would have been easy, especially if you worked in the towers and got out... but the real problem is getting a new identity (if someone wanted to do that). You can't get bank accounts, credit cards, drivers licenses, etc (for the most part) without a social security number. To get a fake one of these, you have to know the right people. Without bank accounts and credit cards, you cant get car or house loans, you cant get most jobs without a legal identity, etc. So perhaps someone could have faked their death, but their chances of living a successful life in America afterwards are pretty slim.

But who would use something so horrible to get "ahead" in life
