Americans like to party. Any excuse is good, especially if it hails from the Irish culture. Although Germans have the beer fest as well but not celebrated here. It's simply because of the Irish community in the US. Mix them with the American tradition of partying hard and you get St Patty's day

Everyone likes to drink & party [mostly]
Alot of people believe the stereotypes about Irish [the drinking culture]
Alot of people have Irish ancestory around the world
For the vast majority of Irish people when they were young this 'holiday' was celebrated by going to mass [i wonder how many do it there as children, i dont know] and we grew up with it being a normal religious holiday, only getting to the partying stage AFTER we have learned the religious significance
People seem to use any excuse to jump on the plastic paddy bandwagon

there is a huge irish population in and around new york a lot of irish emigrated to america because of hardship in ireland these people are proud of their irish roots thus the st patricks day celebrations are huge

A lot of americans are descended from the Irish emigrants who went to America to escape the failure of the potato crops.So in return the American Irish funded the IRA...God Bless America

Huge amounts of Irish fled from 1845 and 1849 to Newyork during the potato famine, from there the Irish just expanded, Majority of Newyork residents are Irish, thats why they go all out.

Plus thier American and for them Bigger is Better!!

It shows once again the commercial aspect of our society. We have taboos against drinking but turn any Holiday into an all out Alcohol and Selling binge. We don't know the cultures we truly came from also so it makes for our created one, American.

cos most of them have emigrated to the USA,
so that means there are more irish in the us than in Ireland.
