I must say that there are one or two areas we can agree on but some we don't. We never were there because of 9/11 but rather to prevent another attack like 9/11 (that is why it was called preemptive). Iraq under Saddam had for years been allowing training camps for terrorist and they harbored terrorist. You are wrong about the Iraqis not liking the US. The people of Iraq as a whole did and do like us. There are some Mideastern countries that don't like the US but Iraq was not one of them. Saudi and Iran are not our biggest fans and it was from Saudi Arabia that the terrorist came (bet if you looked at where they were trained it would be somewhere like Iraq, Iran Syria, Afghanistan, or Pakistan.

According to the polls, it is not because the American people support it because they overwhelmingly do not. (see link 1)
It is not because the American military troops support the mission, they do not. (see link 2)
not even the generals support the war (see link 3)
it is not because of 9/11 or to fight terrorists, or WMDs or any of the reasons given for the invasion in the first place (see link 4)
it is not because the Iraqi people want us there, they do not (see link 5)
the only thing left is that the GOP would rather risk thousands of other people's lives than admit to a huge mistake.

the iraq people do want us there... I have friends in iraq and they always tell me the same thing... the news is not telling everything..
personally I dont want the terrorist over here.. but I think as soon as we pull out they will come.. no reason not to..
everyone has the answer or so everyone thinks.. we will see I guess so enough... we took the fight to the arabs, just like they wanted... now some people want to run away... saying 3200 troops is to many...
all I keep thinking is what if the GOP is right and they come here when we leave... what then... we are screwed.. noone on the right and noone on the left has closed the border... so they can just walk across... what happens if they do walk across... who do you do.. we have been getting attacked since 1970... only they are getting worse...the terrorist are getting bolder.... they dont want to be friends.. they dont like some things we do.. like pray to Jesus.... let others no believe in God... let women have jobs or vote.. let women go to school.... they just see things different... and they are all about killing what they dont believe in.. so what do we do? stand and take it or run away?
really want to know what people think when they say run away? to what and for how long ?

to arwenlotr :
hahaha, are you serious ?
For your information, its US intervention who created the instability necessary for those sectarian fighting.
Oh my god...
and shiites are what ? terrorists ?
This is beyond ignorance, its brushing stupidity.
For a serious and objective answer :
USA stay in Iraq for the same reason they stayed in Vietnam even when they knew the war was lost. PRESTIGE. Running from Iraq would result in a great lose of prestige and USA foreign politic and geostrategy cannot let that happen.
Do you think the government really give a damn about how the average iraqi feel about the invasion? Only realistic results count for them.

Finish the job!
What was the 1rst job that turned out to be a lie?
Defeat Iraqs militaryand then leave! A lie
#2nd job?
Get the WMD's and leave. two lies in one.
#3 rd job
Get Saddam and a deck of cards then leave!
Got a full house of cards and Saddam but still there, another lie.
#4 job
Give them democracy by an election and then leave?
Over 100 partys ran in election we got a Islamic Religous dictatorship[. another lie.
#5 Job
Give hundreds of billions to private contractos to rebuild country.
Spent billions of our own and 9 billions of Iraqui money and all infrastructure is worse off today than day we entered.
EXCEPT THE OIL FIELDS. another lie.
Civil war was instigated by US as we armed the Shias to stop the Sunnis who were rebelling and then we armed the Sunnis who we now want to counterbalance against the Shias. Problems in country before we got there compared to today thousands of times worse than before we entered.
The biggest lie is the one being told by Americans to themselves to justify why we invaded a country that had never threatend us and allowed ourselves to be so misled as to cause over 600,000 Iraqui deaths with close to a hundred more a day since we gave them democracy.

We are still in Iraq because there are people that need us to be. The ones that don't "want us to be" are the same ones that will begin killing the innocent women and children (the liberals claim to be so worried about) the moment we leave.
Remember when we "pulled out" the last time??? What was the death tole that time? How many new terrorists did we make in the process of leaving innocent people to their demise? It just dawned on me that liberals are trying to apply their birth control method to the war on terror - pull out and hope for the best. If anything happens - we won't claim responsibility for it anyway.

We are there simply because the alternatives presented thus far are not viable or in our best interests.
There is no doubt in my mind that if a candidate should appear with a policy that makes sense, he would immediately propel himself to the top of the list of candidates presently competing for the nomination..
Cut and run, immediate withdrawal or a time table for withdrawal are not viable alternatives fo the long range security of this country - and the authors of these agendas know this. It is just political grand standing and a way to get their position on record. These proposals do absolutely nothing to address the concern.

You know I hated that we got into this war; but I hate when people think that you can just up an leave it too.
We have a responsibility for the current condition of Iraq and just walking out isn't going to do us or them any good.
I fear that we are doing so little at this point that eventually we will leave and we'll leave the country fractured and without a reasonable infrastructure and we'll grow a whole new crop of people who hate America.

The Iraqis are in the middle of a civil war and the AL-queda and Shiites are terrorists. those insane wackos blow up their own people! If we can help Iraq stand on its own feet and fight for themselves, then we can resume the war on terrorism in the other countries. There have been problems growing in that area for decades, not just because of 9/11. This has been growing for a long time now. It's about time we did something about it!

You are there because you are stuck.
You cannot pull out because if you do, the Iraqi's will escalate their civil war, you will be blamed for the resultant bloodbath, the region will get less stable, and you will lose some valuable prizes - a miltary presence and a supply of Iraqi oil.
Your only option is to stay and try to sort the country out. Which is fine for all your enemies, they can do atrocious things and you will get blamed!
