"An independent film, or indie film, is usually a low-budget film that is produced by a small movie studio. Additionally, the term is used to describe less commercially-driven art films which differ markedly from the norms of plot-driven, mainstream classical Hollywood cinema. These films are often produced by subsidiaries of larger studios, as long as less than half of its budget comes from a major movie studio. Independent films are often distinguishable by their content or style. The writer or director's original authorial intent or personal creative vision is usually maintained in the final film."
The above is the official Wikipedia version of Indie FIlms.
Indie films have become popular over the years with fans and many times will give big hollywood stars the chance to show their acting skills on smaller scale movies. Popularity of Indie films festivals have grown with the two biggest being Sundance Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival. Many times at these festivals awards are given out, and studios bid for the rights to distribute these movies to a wider number of theatres.
Indie films also have their own awards during awards season, the Independant Spirit Awards (origionally called the FINDIE awards) Many films that do well at the ISA get some oscar nominations. Some noteable winners for best Indie film at the ISA's that have all gotten oscar recognition in some form(best screenplay, actors, best film, best director...etc.)
2007 - Little Miss Sunshine
2006 - Brokeback Mountain
2005 - Sideways
2004 - Lost in Translation
2002 - Memento
2001 - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
1997 - Fargo
1996 - Leaving Las Vegas
1995 - Pulp Fiction
1987 - Platoon
Some of the most well known indie film producing studios that you see involved in these movies are Picturehouse, Thinkfilm, Warner Independant Pictures, Lionsgate, Focus Feature/Rogue Pictures, and Sony Picture Classics. AS you can tell many of these are smaller divisions of bigger companies like Sony or Warner, therefore many feel are not "true" independant films, but as long as they fit the criteria of an indie film based on percentage of backing, then they are indie films.

Indie = independent.
There are not only independent movies, but music as well.
Independent movies/music are made without a financing label

I'm guessing, but I think its a movie made by an independent filmmaker rather than a major studio like MGM.
