I have been making a craft using downloaded images from the internet. Up until now they have been just gifts for friends. I've been thinking of selling them but am unsure how to check about copyright etc. Mostly they are old advertising images and celebritiy images. Any ideas, resources I could check?

You can find a list of resources to search for public domain images at the following site:

Since there are many images and the names can be changed by anyone the resourcees can't help you. You must asume every image has a copyright, even if the image is an old one, for example The Mona Lisa has no copyright but the image you see on internet was taken by a photographer and he has the copyright of that picture.

Do you see the point? Don't asume anything or you will end up having to pay a fine (from $50,000 - $250,000) per item or jail time.

About celebrities, you need theirs or the photographer's concent to use their pictures. Even is the celebritty is dead, that picture might still belong to some movie studio, magazine or to some family member.

Buy royalty free images (but make sure they can be used for commercial use, some are just for private not commercial use), some sites have them for free other sites have public domain images (public domain images have no copyright becasue they expired of becuase the owner want to make them free). If the images belong to Disney then forget about them, they even dared to sue a British Children Hospital, Disney lost but they showed their real colors.

Copyright is very complex so don't asume anything.

If the images were originally created by your friends, then your friends own the copyright on those images, and they can give you a license (permssion) to use them.

If those images were created by someone else, then using them without permission (for just about any purpose) is a copyright violation. To avoid this, contact the owners of the images and ask permission.

If you didn't create the image, buy rights to use it, or get a release from owner, you can't use it as part of any product or service you sell. It's unlikely that anyone will come after you for what you've already done for your family, but technically, you're in violation on that count too (reproduction of copyrighted material).

most of the images, that are uploaded on to the net and are downloadeble at free of cost are violations of copyright. there is nothing like free lunch. everything has a price.
