When we were told to be monogamous, We were only living in to our 30's. Now we live for so much longer is it unreasonable to ask a person to commit to you for life.

Before I get attacked this is a question NOT an opinion!

culture changes, cultural "values" change as well (values are basically opinions and those change). Monogomy is only outdated for those who do not wish to share in monogomous relationships.

I am in a monogomous relationship. It is not outdated to me. I have also been in a poly-open relationship. I have several dear friends who are in a poly-closed relationship and there are about 10 people in total in their family. They are a very cohesive family, loving, and caring and very committed. If all families could be so cohesive, loving and committed as that family, I think our world just might be a whole lot happier.

Judging monogomy as better than or worse than any other kind of relationship that consenting (informed consent) people enter into, is like saying that homosexuals can never actually love one another. Its an absurd notion to me.

I'm glad you posted this though. It is important to expant equality and protection to ALL families and sometimes I think people forget that the oppressed can oppress others. We need more open dialogues like this. ^_^

No, I don't think it's outdated. However, the reasons why some people aren't monogamous I think are extremely varied. Some are psychological and others are social. Personally, I think monogamy is ideal.

I do not think it is unreasonable to ask people to be monogamous. It is the most stable way to raise healthy children. Besides, once you find the right person, you want to give your life to them. You're not asked to, you want to. That's the way love works.

Not so much outdated as totally unnatural. Humans are genetically programmed to mate with each ther - it is why we fancy other people.

I decided, long ago, that I could not live by such unnatural rules and have built up a network of friends who meet for purely sexual gratification

I too seriously question being with only one person for your whole life.

Monogamy does seem to be not working so well for many Americans, with the huge amount of cheating going on and failed marriages as a result of not standing to be stuck with one person for life.

that is a very good question. It's not realistic, is it? People change with time. Only in a few cases does a person spend the rest of their life with one person

No monogomy is not out dated. It is not to do with life span, it is to do with the fact that you love someone and you want to spend your life with them. Be it 10 years or 100 years.
In today's world monogomy is more important than ever with all these strange diseases going around.

Monogamy is NOT outdated and neither is using sterling silver flatware on the table instead of stainless steel.
