Why do we celebrate him and allow schools to lie to our kids by not telling them the whole truth? Obviously it would make the founding of our "great nation" not look so great, but the truth is the truth, right?

AFwife, what if I discovered you? Sure you are your husbands, but the world doesn't know that, right? And just cause it was normal back then, doesn't mean we should be celebrating it now! And I don't like to deal with p.c. too much, I prefer the truth!

In Fourteen hundred and Ninety Two
Columbus sailed the ocean blue
And on the shore the Indians stood
And said "There goes the neighborhood"

Yes. For having the courage to set sail into the unknown. The "real" hero would be Amerigo Vespucci. Emphasis on the name "Amerigo." America was named in his honor. :)
Just wanted to add a couple of lines. Remember back in those days, the popular belief was that there were all sorts of monsters in the ocean. So having said that, Columbus is indeed a hero for venturing into the unknown and returning to prove them wrong. :)

CC was a discoverer, an adventurer, not a hero. Columbus Day is just a nice holiday to celebrate for the immigrant wave from Italy, like St. Patty's is a nice holiday to celebrate for the immigrant wave from Ireland. Don't read too much into this. You can't blame Chris for our slaughter of the native peoples.

Who thinks Christopher Columbus is a hero....hmmm?
Well, perhaps we should ask the people that know him best, right? Allow me a moment to channel all of the souls of the people he had slaughtered and enslaved to claim his supposed "America" which he in fact did not discover. An Italian discovered America! LMAO. History books crack me up. Christopher Columbos was a self-righteous jerk who stole lives and land to forward his own selfish agenda. Who thinks he's a hero? Certainly not me, and I will make sure my children and my childrens children know that, as well.

The thing I hate is that CC had ZERO to do with founding America. As a product of his times, his was also exploitive and a slaver (which I can't fault him for using today's morality vs. yesterdays). So no, not a hero. Brave and stubborn, maybe.

yes i do, the guy dared to do what most people were afraid to do, and he didn't even know he landed in America, but soon after everyone found out, i wish he could of lived to know what he discovered, just because people were already here doesn't mean it was discovered, if the world doesn't know about it its not discovered
