I mean, they're not hurting anyone physically. They're taking THEIR OWN life, NOT someone else's. Why does the government have the right to stop someone who feels hopeless from killing themselves. And I don't want a religious "God has a plan for you" answer. I want a logical answer.

Laws are not always about protecting someone else. Seat belt laws, for example, are in place for general societal good. If you are not wearing your seat belt and have an accident, chances are higher YOU will be the one hurt the most. BUT, your being hurt, in turn has potential consequences on society at large. For example, insurance rates increase for everyone due to the higher cost associated with accidents, etc. Thus, sometimes laws are enacted to protect the greater good of society as a whole. Ostensibly, then, suicide is deemed a detriment to the greater good.

Contrarty to what the rumor mill has told you, Suicide is not illegal in most US states, nor in many countries. Check the laws yourself if you don't believe me.

With one or two exceptions, those few states which do consider it to be illegal are basing their decisions on old English common law, going back centuries. And much of old English common law was based on religious dogma, since the Anglican religion was mandated under royal law.

And suicide is never considered murder, because murder is homicide, which by definition means the killing "of another". Not yourself.

What's the difference? Suicide "victims" can't be punished. They aren't even punished for attempted suicide.

The reason that there are laws prohibiting suicide is to set the image that suicide is the wrong thing to do. Which it is in most cases. The only time I can see suicide as beneficial is when someone has a disease that causes them a lot of pain.

Suicide is illegal because the government considers it to be murder, and because the life insurance companies do not want to have to pay the family money every time someone kills themself. I'm dead serious that's exactly why it's illegal.

If you take a minute to extrapolate this idea to it's ultimate conclussion , the answer is becomes funny.
If suicide is considered murder and as such is of course illegal , then if you attempt to kill yourself in a state that allows capital punishment, then the state can prosecute you and sentence you to death for killing yourself or at least trying. Interesting indeed.

I did not know suicide was illegal. So if someone commits suicide what is punishment! Is it a misdemeanor or felony? LOL. I thought it was just an insurance co. thing, so they do not have to pay.

Simple logic
Christian Laws are based on Christian religion
Not trying to get preachy cos im agnostic but.
God gave us life and god alone can take it away
a christian god says its wrong,
if you live in a christian society your laws are based on what god says.
Its been that way since the 10 comandments
