Forget the 1" per gallon rule, it's totally bogus and meaningless for any kind of tank and even more so for saltwater.

I would suggest you google mini reef or micro reef or even nano reef and look over some of the sites and articles that pop up. It will give you a totally different perspective on a small saltwater tank.

12 gallons is too small for a saltwater tank. You should go with AT LEAST 30 gallons, preferably 50.

But if you just have to do the 12 gallon, try getting two or three seahorses. They are slow swimmers and don't need much room.

this is an easy question: none! you should have at least a 75 gallon or bigger for saltwater fish. you should start off better with a freshwater tank. here are a few suggestions for fish you can fit in your tank: neon tetras, glowlight tetras, guppies, platies, mollies, dwarf gouramis, small barbs like tiger barbs, cherry barb, and a few ghost shrimp etc. if you would like some more info go to aquariumfish.net :-)

A 12 gallon tank is way to small for a saltwater tank of any kind. Please remember when using the 1 inch rule to take into account that fish DO grow.....

Either get a bigger tank or look at fresh water fish like guppies or a gold fish

Totally bogus, as MM said! Start with one, if he does well after a few months, try one more. No more.

Here's a page of fish that may do well for a tank your size. Be careful of temperments and care levels - try to get something peaceful and easy to care for/hardy. Also, be sure to cycle the tank before add ing any fish (second link).
