i would think that there is a way to use pci cards from desktops, with laptops. like a cable that has a connection for a card, and then goes to either usb, firewire, or the card slot. i have a high-end soundcard with a breakout box, and i really want to use it with my laptop...

that's not going to happen. however you can get a usb sound card that will work for both desktop and laptop.
