the book is about a young boy who befriends these dragons. thre are 4 books in this serious most of the titles have dragon in them. This is all i know.

Three Tales of My Father's Dragon by Ruth Gannett. The boy is Elmer, and he goes with a dragon to an island where there are more dragons and jungle animals.

Are you sure you arent talking about the YA section of the Pern books? There were some there like the one about Robinton that sound like what you are looking for. What you are talking about sounds like Dragonsong - the one about Menolly - one of the better Pern books. C.
