I work at M&S, out of date food is removed from sale 2hrs before the date stated. There is a £1,000 fine for EACH item found by Health and Safety but Im not sure if it only applies to large stores.

The sell-by date is the last date the product is supposed to be sold. So if that date is past, the product should be removed from the shelf. It is up to the consumer to check that date, however. If it's out of date, don't buy it. If you buy it anyway, you can't blame it on the store. If you spot some products with expired dates in the store, notify the manager. They will remove them from the shelves.

there is no set time frame, however, most stores will throw away any items after sell by date for safety.

if shop is selling an item after sell by date, alert management or the food manufacturer immediately...
