You might also know that Turkey is an Islamic country and a democracy. They did it their way not ours.

No, it is not an oxymoron.
This is a more Asian style of Islam, as compared to Middle Eastern, or South American, etc style of Islam.
Islam and Democracy can work in some situations, it just may take generations for it to work.
A friend of mine from Turkey told me that Islam means "to submit", and that for many practitioners of that religion having a voice in the government is illogical. For them, it is their job to submit to Allah, and to the government and other authorities. But this not the case for all Muslims, he said. For Turkey has been democratic since the '20s. The difference is time. As the generations experience democrary, it does work. It just takes time. He then explained how logically all Muslim countries would be democratic, but I really do not remember all of the conversation, other than his reading of the Koran supported democracy.
There will always be some that are against democracy, but we have people like that in the US. They just usually are not quite so violent.

Respondents ‘Coragryph’ and Lirianoforpresident’ above had spoken our position and thoughts precisely.

Bangladesh was never a theocratic country, nor having any resemblance to the governance of Saudi Arabia and most Arab world. We are also far away from Iran or Pakistan type either in terms of having any Islamic law governing our daily life. Our country’s constitution is fairly secular, if a few symbolisms like introduction of “Bismillah…” as preamble in the constitution are overlooked.

We have democracy to that extent when our the then leader of opposition (Sk. Hasina) constantly charged the then government led by Khaleda Zia accusing her of persecution of minorities, hinting mainly the Hindus, to earn favour from India in her quest to get into power with India’s blessings.

In reality the problem was a localized in nature when the last government came to power in 2001 and the law & order situation was made to deteriorate by the party who lost to make it look anarchy prevailing here and wishing India’s military intervention in our country.

Even when there was peaceful handing over of state power on 27th October 2006 to a constitutionally mandated Caretaker government was in the offing, the same group created one of the worst law & order situation in our country for weeks and months which ultimately resulted in the declaration of State of Emergency in our country which these unscrupulous politicians were earnestly asking for. Now the new caretaker government sworn on 12-1-2007 has been very tough on hooliganism and anarchism in almost all the sphere of national life, these dirty politicians again started raising their ugly voices.

So, in a way, you have also raised the Islamophobia bogie here to make people believe that 85% Muslim populated country Bangladesh can not have civilized (democratic) way of governance! We can be poorer than many countries in the vicinity but our earnest desire to remain free and democratic is ingrained in the psyche of the general people that would guard us from any future tyrants!

Islam is a religion.

Democracy is a political model that says the decisions are ultimately made by the people, either directly collectively (polyarchal) or by electing representatives (republic).

One has nothing to do with the other. In fact, the biggest sectarian split between the major factions in Islam is whether government should be subject to or independent of religious rule.
