My husband and I have just started to let our baby cry herself to sleep for naps and at night. So far our baby has been able to cry herself to sleep after a few minutes but after going to sleep for just 10 mins she wakes herself up and will start crying without being being able to put herself back to sleep. We tried going in and comforting her and then putting her back down for her nap but this has not worked. We also tried lessening her stimulation before the nap but this has also not worked. Please advise if you have any suggestions ?

Thank you

How old is your baby? Infants who are very young may still need nighttime feedings at least every four hours or so. Letting a baby cry it out is also teaching her that you may not be responsive to her needs, and she is too young to know why. I suggest starting each nap and sleep period with some soothing techniques. I have heard that infant massage can be helpful, as can swaddling a young baby and adding white noise, like a fan in the room or some lullabye music. While it's ideal to put her down drowsy, you may want to rock her, then sing to her while rubbing her belly, even if this takes awhile. If you are consistent with the times of nap and sleeping, eventually she'll get the hamg of it. Taking time, even enormous amounts of it, to sooth her won't spoil you baby in any way and will help you avoid tears.

You were on the right track with lessening stimulation and letting her cry for a few minutes then go in and comfort her. However what I have found that works well also is when I used to put my daughter to bed I would cover her with blankets that just came out of the dryer so they would be toasty warm. I also would spray them one of my scents so that she would smell me. When she would reawaken I found she would go back down easier or on her own. There is a sense of comfort and stability with the warmth and familiar scent. Good Luck

there are a few known ways that might work .you can try soft music for it ,or give her a cloth with the mothers smell.no need for old socks though lol.the pillow covering you used the day before can do very well.it works better with the mothers by the way..
a teddy bear with a clock ticking inside it will simulate a heart beat .
leaving your baby to cry itself to sleep isn't a very recommendable way.my wife is an infant educator and never uses this method at work.
i wish you best of luck !

DON'T GO BACK IN AND COMFORT HER! you are just reinforcing the behaviour you want to stop. You have to let her cry herself back to sleep AGAIN, no matter how long it takes.

Try playing music for your baby when you put them down for a nap or bedtime... I purchased a tape player that attached to my son's crib & played music for him.. It worked for mine so maybe it will work for yours.

Science tells us that when babies cry alone and unattended, they experience panic and anxiety.
Their bodies and brains are flooded with adrenaline and cortisol stress hormones.
