Here it is 2007 and I cannot believe the the United States Postal Service does not provide Outdoor Mail Boxes at Walmart, Shopping Centers, Home Depot, Grocery Stores, Bus Stations, etc! It would be so convenient to today's busy busy world and going to one of these stores to do shopping, to be able to drop a letter in a mailbox, and forget about it, knowing it would be picked up, instead of driving to the Post Office to drop a letter in the mailbox, In my case here in North Las Vegas Nevada, I have a choice of Two Postoffices, each are 4 miles from my house, that is 4 miles to and 4 miles from, usually here in Las Vegas there is always alot of traffic, To me it is unnecessary, when I could just drop it in a Mailbox while I do my shopping! NOTE: I do not like to put mail in my community mailbox, and let it set there, not knowing if it will be broken into and stolen! USPS please consider this, and if enough people request this, maybe they will implement putting these Mailboxes!

Here where I live the USPS has installed collection boxes in front of the WalMart and at numerous other supermarkets. They have been there ever since we moved into town 6 years ago.
Is the community mailbox that you speak of locked, with the only access to it by postal personnel? If so it is safe.
I am a carrier and I have some mailboxes at condo units that have a slot for outgoing mail. It is emptied everyday that we deliver. No one has the secure key except a letter carrier.

Also if your home mailbox is in a safe area you can leave mail for the carrier to pick up, no need to drive 8 miles roundtrip. Just try not to leave mail (incoming or outgoing) in the box overnight.

You're about 15 years behind the times. USPS has begun phasing out the corner mail boxes because - you guessed it - not enough people use them to justify the expense of keeping them up. You know how it is - they get run over by cars - kids paint them up - and some even get stolen.
