you can do it in advance, but there are lots of trains to NY from Boston, (lots of commuters go between the two cities) so you could just do it online when you get here.
The train will leave from South Station in Boston. www.amtrack.com for train tickets.
or you can save a lot of money and take a bus. takes about the same amount of time, is a little more cramped but still comfortable. www.greyhound.com for $15 online one way tickets. Will also leave from South Station.
Both trains and busses leave every hour between the two cities.
have fun!

Go to www.amtrak.com to buy tickets or you can buy in Boston. Once you're in Boston, go to South Station, where the train will depart from.
Probably best to get on the Acela Express. It's much faster with fewer stops.

You can buy it once you get to the USA. You can purchase it the day you are travelling and price normally won't change. Have a great trip!

No need to buy it in advance. If you are really worried about it, you can buy it a day or two in advance.

I would advise buying it in advance to save disappointment.
