A new study says that college kids are self-centered. The researchers link it to the relentless "self-esteem" movement that began in the 80's.

What do you think?

i agree, but i think people of any age are getting more narcissistic. it has even been proven that mtv is causing people to be more self-centered and materialistic. the shows on mtv all suck now, they're all just about selfish blonde girls from so cal and people looking for a bf/gf. it's supposed to be MUSIC television.

You really answered your own question.
The young adult generation of the 80's was the ME Generation and these are the parents of the present day kids
your talking about.....So they took lessons from the attitudes of their parents...
This ADD/ADHD generation was labeled INDIGO's or free
thinkers with social conscious and minds that work 99miles an hour...there are also CRYSTAL's
(a little younger) known to be empathic. After them are the
BLUERAY children which have a quality of healing others
just by being in their presence.....So have faith - with the new
planetary energies there is a new species of human developing on the horizon.

Everything is wrong with narcissism.

Self-love is not bad if we do not become 'in love' with ourselves. There lies the difference.

Self-esteem is not based on narcissism. It is caring about our living and doing that which is uplifting and beneficial to our growth, our improvement; making the right moves to have successful and progressive lives; not seeing ourselves as unworthy or not good enough; knowing within that we are worthwhile creatures.

Today's young people are self-absorbed for the most part - narcissistic. They wear it on their faces, their shoulders, their backs. It is in their speech, their attitudes to life and to others.

That's the difference!

i believe it, most people are self centered, young people are especially narcissistic, gettin all caught up in the "fashion" and "fads" and "diets" and "material posessions". i hate all that. i'd rather not use the word hate, but theres nothing better. if it has anything to do with self esteem... it's lack of it.

i would actually say its the opposite, many people act very pleased with themselves, but few truly are. i believe many of us use this as a defence mechanism, to protect ourselves from the hurtful words of others. but as the saying goes "you are your own worst enemy". humans are a rather self destructive breed, why? i have no clue, but oh well.

Well, what is wrong with that?

I think it may have come from the 60s when individualism was really big.

Anyway, I don't see anything wrong with that as long as people are still decent to each other.
