It seems, myself included, that no one can have a decent discussion any more. It seems to break down to name calling and insults without logic. Which side are you and what is your opinion?

Viva la differance! The "conflict" will never go away. The think I don't care much for is the caustic way that people communicate their differences.

I would like to see a lot more respect for honestly held beliefs even if you don't agree with them.

And yes, I have been guilty also...trying to change that.

It's funny, I posted a question similar to this a little while ago. I think you phrased it better though.

Anyway... I am an independent. I try to see both sides of the argument before I make a decision. I don't want to be closed minded. I find that to be the most frustrating thing about politics- when people refuse to hear what the other side is saying because they're already convinced that they themselves are right. Well, that and all the name calling.

I am slightly left of center and to someone who is in the center or slightly right of center I have no trouble discussing issues with them. Unfortunately we have some radicals on both sides that I find difficult. I get down on both sides when I think they are out of line. Just yesterday, I defended Republicans because one of the Left radicals was being unreasonable.

Sometimes it is fun to see what those crazy people come up with. It is especially fun to smack them down with indisputable logic including throwing their own idiocy back at them with a few modifications. Then they see how stupid they can be.

To paraphrase Forrest Gump--Stupid is as stupid says.

I'm left wing, proud daughter of a proud military career man. I support the constitution. I believe in the proud traditions of our country. Right now, the right wingers are truly fascists. That is, they believe in militarism, in a mythical good old days, they support the merging of govt and corporate power, and a return to a state religion.

Having those opinions is one thing; trying to enact them is another. This makes them dangerous, not just to me, but to all of us. I do hate what they stand for, and I hate how brainwashed and ignorant they are. However, I have a number of friends who ended up this brainwashed, and so I don't hate them. But their ignorance is a grave danger to their country and discussing things with them reflects the passion that comes of trying to save our way of life.

Since I've had conversations with conservatives and they can never back up what they say with facts, and they always resort to name-calling, I know that although they think liberals are a danger etc etc, also, the right wingers just don't have the facts on their side.

I'm a right winger and I completely agree with you about the breakdown of discussion. I try not to get dragged into name - calling. There is a tendency these days to immediately psychoanalyze anyone with whom one disagrees, and to attribute to neurosis what may be a valid point of view with which one disagrees. It's all part of the "there is no such thing as truth so win at any price" culture the legal industry has spawned.

I am a socialist and therefore right-wingers (as well as a lot of left-wingers, to be sure) are fundamentally opposed to my politics, and I theirs. I would rather resort to name calling than waste my time arguing "decently" with someone when neither of us will change our positions. Furthermore, I share a mutual hatred with many people to my right, and thus insults are inevitable.

I agree with you. I think that the division between the two extremes has grown much wider within the past 15 years, much of it fueled by partisan politics -- rather than concern for America.

I don't have a "side," really. I was a Republican for 20 years until 2000; I'm a pro-life Christian, who believes that "pro-life" means no abortion, no death penalty, no unjust wars. I do not support our Idiot King's bogus "war" in Iraq, and I think most ultra-conservatives are hypocrites (and Jesus detested hypocrites).

As far as I am concerned, it all started after the 2000 presidential election...I am a conservative and I am putting America first...but then, that is what a leftist will tell you as well...America will be 50/50 for quite some time...until America is attacked again in a major way...Then America will swing to the right, again.

Well, those on this forum who spew such nonsense are young, uneducated, mostly teenagers who have no idea what they are talking about. They just love to stick their nose out there with rhetoric they have heard from their friends or some loser talk radio.

They really don't have a clue what it means.

90% of the posts on here are just trolls trying to get reactions out of people because they know that there are people out there that are passionate about their political beliefs.

The main difference though, is that when a non-troll republican posts with angry stuff, they are usually just parroting the trolls.

When a non-troll democrat posts, and they are angry, it is because they have watched for the last six years as a do-nothing rubberstamp republican congress enabled this administration to become one of the most corrupt of all time - and allowed them to wage an unending war in iraq.

That do-nothing rubberstamp congress is gone now though.

The time of reckoning is at hand for the GOP. You are going to see some angry Bush supporters on here - fortunately it won't make any difference, they are all going down.
