Most of them are obvious: Defensive end, defensive back, linebacker, receiver, etc. but how did names like quarterback, halfback, fullback come about?

the QB is a quarter of the way back when in a full set,when football first became a sport the fullback played in what is now the half backs position,and the half back gets its name from being half way between the QB and FB,but when football became a major sport,the FB and halfback switched positions on the field because the FB was usually bigger and stronger making him a better blocker,so they moved him up in the formation(behind the QB) for pass and run blocking

They are in reference to their positions on the field. They are "backs" essentially so they have to put an identifying name on that. They are mathematically in reference, quarter, half and full backs. Nothing real scientific about it or there isn't a secret logic behind it.

Look at the positions on a chart, man!! The quarterback stands right behind the center, the half-back usually stands behind him, and the full-back stands behind them.

This is correct. But to tell you the truth... i have no idea... I'm a linebacker and a fullback.. and i still have no idea.
