I won't go into the details but suffice it to say that I had to cut a couple of people completely out of my life many years ago. It was the only way I could be an emotionally healthy adult.
I sometimes wish things could have been different but I understand these two people are still as sick and twisted as they were when I was a teen so I'm confident that I did the right thing.

Are they the same as lousy parents?

Sometimes you just have to cut them out of your life and give yourself some breathing room. If that's not an option, maybe it needs to be. When I was 15 (I'm not saying you are but I'm just using an example) I needed to break away from my family. I felt like I couldn't though, that I couldn't legally be on my own.

It's a mistake I've paid for ever since, and in retrospect I've thought of dozens of ways I could've left.

Get help from a trusted source, or the right authorities.
