I need latin help...?

Question

What are the latin words for:

wheat
wine
grain
oil
seafood
tavern
groceries
vegetables
fruit
office
auditorium
balcony

((I'm in latin II but I forgot my book at school, over springbreak.))

Well, I don't specifically need words from my book (some words probably won't be in my book). I'm doing a latin project on the Trajan market, and I just need titles for the lil' shops.

I'm in Ecce Romani II.

grain = frumentum-frumenti (neuter)
oil = oleum -olei (neuter)
seafood = cibus marinus (masc.)
tavern = taberna-tabernae (fem.)
groceries = cibi (masc.pl.)
vegetables = virores (masc.pl)
fruit = fructus-fructus (neuter)
office = officina-officinae (fem)
auditorium = auditorium-auditori (neuter)
balcony= maenianum- maeniani (neuter)

What book are you using? You might be able to find wordlists for your specific book online. There are different words in some cases, so looking them up online might give you different words than your book intended.

Here's a few I recall:
frumentum : grain.
fructus, fructus - fruit
taberna - tavern (fem. 1st.)
vinum - wine

grain: frumentum, -i, but horreum, horrei, n, means 'granary', or the building where grain is stored.


groceries: just use 'food' - cibus, -i

oil: crocinus is 'yellow oil' with saffron in it. Olive oil, the main cooking oil of the Mediterranean, is oleum -i (n).

seafood: best off combining mare, -is (n) with cibus. Can't find a group word for 'all edible fishes' or anything. Fishmonger is piscator, -oris or ceterius, -i, both m.


vegetables: 'forum holitorium' means the vegetable-market, or 'forum of the herbs' (it doesn't just mean what we think of as herbs, but all plants generically.)

office: legatio is a political title, not a place. I'd use 'business' instead, as I can't find a word for office-space. Either mercatus -us (m), or negotiolum -i n. (a little business) may be place-names

auditorium: Just use theater: theatrum -i n.

balcony: If you mean in the theater, velarium -i n., or podium -i n.
