Why is the fear of long words called Hippopotomonstrosesquipped-
aliophobia?
Just imagine it:
Doctor: Do you have any fears?
Patient: Yes, I have a fear called hippopotomonAAAHHHH..
Maybe the person who decides these words has an evil sense of humour?

Maybe it's echoic? (ie, the word is supposed to sound like what it means.) I'm a linguistics major.... the final P forces you to make the S sound in an awkward place, maybe to mimic an actual lisp. Just an educated guess.

Hehe, yah, that was a cute question! :)
I think they put the S just to make fun of people who have lisps a little more. :P

Why is abbreviation such a long word?
Why isn't phonics spelled the way it sounds?
Why are they called apartments when they're all stuck together?
Why is it a shipment by land, and a cargo by sea?

It is a form of onomatopoeia. you attempt to give the word a sound that tells you about the condition.
