I see most people have named the BIG name restaurants, so I'll give you a few "locals", great food, cheaper, and without the wait. They also have that quaint city feeling. Most of these are around Lincoln Park neighborhood which is just north of the city.
Fillipo's - Great Italian food - cute decor
Thai Spice - Best Thai food around
Pequod's Pizza - GREAT pizza
These are all on the same block - Clybourn near Webster
also - near the UNiversity of ILlinois campus(used to be little Italy)
Trufano's - (or it might be Tufano's) - More fantastic Italia food
(And, if it's open - Mario's Italian Lemonade - ask at the restaurant - they'll know)
And then there is Greek Town which you MUST go to if you're here - both of these are Great
Parthenon
Greek Islands (might be Isles)
And don't forget Chinatown - don't have any specific recommendations, but it's a fun place to visit.
OH, and you have to have what Chicago might be most famous for - an Italian Beef Sandwich! Go to Al's (also in Little Italy) or even Portillo's.
Have fun and happy eating!

o.ok.Brook has exceedingly a lot each of the major inn chains, Marriott, Hyatt, position of abode inn and so on. maximum of the eating places reported above are not low-cost. There are a pair places in the mall to devour and some you'll get some respectable specials. Wildfire has tremendous steaks, Maggiano is respectable Italian and Mon Ami Gabi is French and they have yet another area on the Paris in Vegas. in case you come from Chicago by Metra practice you likely ought to take the Burlington Line to Hinsdale and also you may capture a cab to o.ok.Brook.

Whoever said Charlie Trotters obviously didn't notice that you mentioned this being a family dining experience. You don't take kids to Trotters. They wouldn't appreciate a $400 dinner for two.
Family-friendly dining that is going to give you the "Chicago" experience would include:
Gino's East (Deep dish sausage pizza)
Portillo's for Italian Beef & dogs
Billy Goat Tavern (Cheezeborger, Cheezeborger, Cheezborger)
Harry Caray's
Wrigley Field (Wrigley Pig pork sandwich...and you get to catch a Cubs game)
Walnut Room at Marshall Fields (I refuse to call it Macy's)
Ditka's
Metromix.com is the best place to go to look up restaurants. You can search by price, type, neighborhood, etc. Also try opentable.com (you can even make reservations online).
Have fun!

Everything Scott said.
By the way, best gyros ever? And a family restaurant?
Dengeo's
McCormick and Main
It's in a suburb very VERY close to West Rogers Park. I'm sure if you ask around somebody would have heard of it, it's very popular and was featured on 190 North as Best Gyros In Town

Ok, I luv pizza, so I will give u some places.
The best thin crust pizza is at D'agostinos, which is located on SouthPort and Addison, in the Wriglyville area/lake view area.
The best stuffed pizza, is at Lumalnatis which is located on Lincoln off of Devon in the Lincolnwood area.
we are also known for hotdogs, make sure u eat at hotdog places who have the sign "Vianna beef", those are the best, anything else is horrible.
Someone mentioned "the signiture room at the 95th", yes its good there, but its exspensive.
and of course we have lots of ethnic food, Puerto rican in humboldt park, Mexican (all over) or in "Villita", Greek in greek town, Indian food ( on devon ave) , so much more.

Leona's - Great moderately priced, kid friendly, large portions, eclectic menu, good food. Many locations throughout the city. My favorite is on Sheridan Road near Loyola University.
If you are downtown try the many restaurants in Marshall Fields *currently known as Macy's, but die hard Chicagoans will still call it Fields!* on State Street. The food is pretty good, and again, they cater to children.
If you are looking for ethnic cuisine, try Devon Avenue on the north side. Take the outer drive north to Hollywood *last exit*, take Hollywood to Broadway. Turn right and head north to Devon. Get in your left lane. and turn left where Sheridan rejoins Broadway *if you keep straight you'll end up back on Sheridan and it's a few blocks to the Leona's I first mentioned.* Drive west on Devon to Western Avenue *about 10 minutes* and you'll enter India! Or as close to it as you'll find in the midwest. Just slow down when you cross Western Avenue. You'll find a zillion authentic India restaurants.
Before you get to Western there are a lot of good restaurants on Devon, Thai food is good at the Blue Elephant. About two blocks west of Devon/Sheridan.
If it is tasty grease you crave, stay of Sheridan road continuing north past Devon and you'll find Gold Coast Dogs *good Chicago style Hot Dogs, burgers, the works,* Giodono's Deep dish pizza, a Chipolte' restaurant serving fast food style Mexican that is pretty good.
If you've never had a Gyro's and want to try one the best place is in Roger's Park. A tacky restaurant on Clark Street at Touhy Ave called Parkside. The best Gyro's anywhere in the city *I'm a native and I've been everywhere!*
If you continue down Clark Street north past Howard, you'll end up in Evanston. Lot's of trendy eating there. Just park in the public lot off Davis street *left turn and you can't miss it for the signs* and walk around. Try Le' Peep for great breakfast menu.
Cajun food at it's reasonably priced best is at Dixie Kitchen and Bait Shop. These restaurants are steps from each other. About 100 yards from the public parking garage.
Well, as a long time resident of the Loyola and East Rogers park area that has recently transplanted to Kentucky, I've given you the best the north shore has to offer in family friendly dining.
Have fun!
