I have a camera (like a web cam) that hooks up to my computer and records but it doesn't pick up sound. I don't have a mic, but will I have to purchase one? In what other way could I get it to record sound?

Yes a microphone and a sound card that takes a microphone will be the only way. If you just want to get a bundle, then get a webcam that has a microphone intergated already.

As others have stated, you'll need a microphone. They are inexpensive, but when you get one, remember to click on the speaker icon in your system tray. When that opens, one of the volume controls will be for the microphone. Also, there will be a small box to "mute" the function. Make sure it is unchecked or you won't get any audio from the mic to record.

As to software, you can get Audacity for the great price of zero. Nada. Zilch - it is free. I've used it with great results. You can export the recorded sounds as a .Wave file or as an MP3 (which saves considerable space). Also, you can edit the file, saving only those chunks you wish to and export them as separate files (which can then be burned as separate tracks on a CD should you wish to record yourself or friends playing musical instruments). There are also other functions (effects, noise reducers, etc.) available for Audacity. There are likely other free sound tools, but I have used Audacity and it does a nice job.

Hope this helps ;)

Best regards,
Jim

First you need to make sure that you have a sound card on your PC. If you do, then you will need to buy a mic, plug it into the slot where it says mic. Recording software comes with Windows but it's not all that great. You can find free software on the internet, also recording software should come with your sound card. Once you make a recording, it saves it as a .WAV file on your hard drive. You can play it back and edit it in any way that you want to.
