I would say that you are confusing law, with company policy and procedures.
Certainly, a WHOLE lot depends on where the store is. There could be a safe place left in this country, but I sure don't know where that is. The store owner may be stupid in doing so, and not protecting the employee (male or female, for that matter). But stupid and illegal are two different issues.

It's not a law, it's more common sense or security. As lone females in stores are far more likey to be robbed then a lone male. As crime continues to grow, the probability of a single female trying to close a store, getting robbed grows as well. Hense why stores are try to "protect" themselves by not allowing females close the store by themselves.
