Just moved here from Southern California and was curious - yeah, I know, I should have asked this question BEFORE I moved here, but I liked it too much for it to really matter before.

If you're from So. Cal then smog as you know it, No. Little to none near the coast because of the off shore winds. Also there are more industial areas in the SC Upstate and western/central areas of NC.

In the Smokey Mountains - you will find smog.

In the central part of NC, you will see smog from time to time.

In the eastern part of NC, you should see zero smog.

"in the Carolinas" is a huge area. I don't think you can get a correct answer unless you are more specific.
