I don't know about him; I do it all the time. I'm sure it depends on how he was brought up. People everywhere (at least in the US) use those terms; usage doesn't usually bring up religious connotations anymore. Almost like 'gee whiz' or 'holy cow'.

As with any other popular expression or exclamation, constant exposure makes it part of your vocabulary, whether you use it based on its originally intended meaning or not.
