I've heard some comments like "ppl who play outfield must not be very good" and other versions but i am sick of it! playin the outfield is hard ok. We outfielders have to back up the infield and if we miss there is no one backin us up, there is a lot of pressure. you cannot miss and u have to be able to judge the fly balls AND ground the grounders. and if its a grounder u may have to throw it all the way home or even harder, u may have to throw it all the way from the fence depending on how far the batter hit it. omg its hard especially center field, in center u r responsible for the entire field bc u c everything and u have to decide who gets the ball and back up wen necessary and make sure everyone in the outfield knows wat is goin on and so on and so forth. so i am sick and tired of hearing about how bad outfielder's must be at playin softball.

Ya, I feel the same way. Outfielders do get a bad rep. I play 2B and shortstop and when I make a mistake (which is rarely) I always know I have the outfield to back me up. The have a very hard position. They have to be fast to run down the ball, good eye-hand coordination, and a strong arm. It's a very tough position especially when the sun is out and in your eyes.

What happens when you are young you are put in the outfield usually right field or left, because not too many balls come out there. Therefore, it’s safe to put the play with the least amount of experience out there. However, if you think that outfielder can’t play you never saw Dave Parker’s All-Star throw from the warning track to home plate probably the greatest throw in baseball, or how about Willie Mayes basket catch. Just remember when you get older and can hit the ball farther you’ll be glad you play the outfield you’ll get all the workout.

When I do play in the outfield I always find it boring and the ball does not normally come to you. However when the ball is hit to you there is a ton of pressure on you not to make a mistake drop the ball or pretty much anything else. It's not fun in the outfield but it is fun to make diving catches and throw a runner out at home plate sometimes.

I think it's an issue of the learning curve for outfield. Initially, it's a tough position when you're just learning the sport. You have to get good at catching balls in mid-air, and off funny bounces. After that, it's a fairly simple position to play passably in. Less plays, more time to react because you're farther away. However, the issue is that it's also a really hard position to be great at. You need a lot of positioning smarts and a lot of speed, plus a rocket arm to be a great outfielder.

So basically, the reason why it gets a bad reputation is that it's 'easy in the middle' of the learning curve- while most of the infield positions are hard to learn the intermediate skills. This, combined with less plays ending up in any particular outfield position versus any particular infield position (at lower levels of play), means that coaches will often put so-so fielders in as their corner outfielders (who are least likely to field a hit). It doesn't mean outfield is an easy position to be great at, it just means its an easy position to be weak at and get away with it.
