Well, it all depends on the job you are applying for. But, in general, you should dress nicely (upscale from your normal wear), be clean and presentable (usually not long hair for guys), and an outgoing personality. The employer wants to believe that you can work well with the customers and/or coworkers. They also want to know that you are dependable, trustworthy, and a good person in general.

Style: Presentable to the public without them going "EWW".

Dress - see above

Personality: You have to be able to work with others without being a psyco. I have worked with others that were Paranoids that thought I was after their job or out to make them look bad. You have to have enough self confidence to be able to let those type of personalities not get you upset.

They want somebody that will not come in work hungover (on any day of the week) and will come to work on time.

I look for workers that actually work 6-8 hours a day (in an 8 hour day). I had to fire a guy once: He showed up at 8, but proceeded to read the paper and eat his breakfast at his desk until around 9. Then, he would go outside and smoke, hit the bathroom and finish the paper and make it back to his desk about 9:45.

At 11:30, he was out the door for lunch. He did not come back until about 1:30 or later. From 3-3:30, another break, and at 4:15, he started to clean off his desk. At 4:45, he would bolt to the door and wait for 5:00. At 5:00 he left for his part time job at Home Depot where he worked from 6:00-9:00 at night (I was told he was Home Depot's best worker)

In general, he only got about an hour of work done a day as the time he was "working" was hanging out at the cubicles of others talking about sports, television, his wife, kids, part-time job, etc...

I was glad to see him go.

They also look for someone who can be molded into what the job or company culture demand.

At microsoft they look for people who can follow the internal culture and look a variety of personality traits. Some employers make you take several tests to see if you fit the mold.

I work in the Surf and skateboard industry so they generally look at me to see if I fit the lifestyle and less on my education (even though I have a college degree). A lot of times it's who you know that gives you the ultimate source credibility and a way in.
