The local teachers strike is exactly a month old now. Senior high school students will be missing out on university if the strike is not resolved soon. It seems unfair that the teachers are putting their own interests ahead of these kids' futures. They're asking a whole class of kids to put their lives on hold for a year so they can get better pay. Should they be allowed to strike at all, and if so, should there be a limit on how long?

Teachers should be public servants, doing an essential job, and thus be forbidden to strike. Plus, it's a bad example for the kids--like having a tamtrum in public.

You kind of answered your own question. Is it fair that they are teaching our future leaders, inventors, World shakers and movers and they are one of the lowest paid laborers with a degree? There are some great teachers out there that do care about the education of a child and they are worth their weight in gold! There would be no seniors if there were no teachers. As for" if they should be aloud to strike at all?" Well this is America the last time I checked, so you go ahead and tell them that a teacher is never aloud to go on strike again and see how many high school graduates will be seeking a teaching degree in the future! There would be no teachers for the future! I think it's just sad that they have to strike in order to get a decent pay raise! For those that see a teacher as a free babysitter through the day, well I guess they would have to pay one then.

As a teacher I feel very strongly about this issue. You said that the teachers are putting their own interests ahead of the kids' futures just so they can get better pay. Have you looked at the average salary for a teacher lately? In my community, teachers do not make enough to live on if they are single. I know too many teachers who have to work a second job just to make ends meet. And this is after going to college for four years or more. Yes, I think this is reason enough to allow them to strike with no limit on how long.

To compare a teachers' strike to a tantrum is ridiculous. I believe it teaches kids to stand up for themselves and what is right. It teaches kids to realize that people can take control over what happens to them. Would anyone compare another group's strike to a tantrum? Probably not. For some reason, people think that teachers are like priests who give up everything for what they believe in. Most teachers did choose teaching because of some kind of calling. However, we still have to provide for ourselves and family, and we should have the right, just like anyone else in this country, to stand up for ourselves when we feel we've not given what's due to us.

Yes, they should be allowed to strike.

...for as long as it takes to knock the kid unconscious!
